Cannanore District Muslim Educational Association (CDMEA)

The Cannanore District Muslim Educational Association (CDMEA) was formed in a meeting, held at Tellicheri in the year 1964. The meeting was actually a get together of a group of Muslim scholars who gathered to discuss the prevailing educational status of the minority communities especially that of Muslims at the Malabar Region. The meeting was chaired by Jb. P.P. Ummarkutty Haji, which decided to form a trust titled CDMEA which would focus on the educational development of the above-mentioned communities. An executive consisting 28 members was formed on the venue, among which Adv.Jb.V. Khalid , Adv. Jb. V.M. Aboobacker and Jb. N.N. Ahmad Haji were elected the President, Gen. Secretary and The Treasurer of the trust, respectively. Adv.Manhu was elected the Gen. Secretary of CDMEA within a few months, as Adv. Aboobacker, the founder secretary, passed away a few months after the foundation of the trust was held. At the initial stage, the Association turned its attention mainly towards two aspects. The first one was to take immediate initiatives for creating awareness among the common Muslim folk of the region on the importance of securing modern education which may help them to be a part of the mainstream of the society. The Association eventually organized Conferences and Conventions to announce and convey its aims and objectives. An annual meeting of the Association, held at the courtyard of the so called Arakkal Palace, which was inaugurated by Justice Raghavan, was a golden feather in the history of the Association with the presence of thousands of common folk as spectators and the wide ranged media coverage. The news published by the media on the event and the speeches delivered by the different scholars paved a smoother and easier road before trust to be attracted and appreciated by the people of different corners of the region. Special trips were arranged by ensuring the presence of almost of all the office bearers of the trust, who were respected and honored by the different walks of the society, for adding more members to the trust and collecting fund for the further projects for the academic development of the common folk belonging to the Minority Communities of the region. Such trips and the competitions like essay writing and elocution, organized by the trust at intervals by ensuring the participation of Muslim students and youth, carried wide ranged publicity and acceptance to the credit of the trust.

Most of the members belonged to Muslim Community of the region at the time had very poor financial background which hindered them from continuing their studies and almost all of them had to stop their academic education just after completing the school education. The Association regarded this to be the second aspect to be given great attention. Thus CDMEA started providing financial aids to hundreds of the common youth which, without any doubt, was a turning point in the academic development of the Minority Communities of the Malabar region. Justice V.Khalid, the founder president of the Association was a noted lawyer at the Tellichery Court. He was the central figure behind all the projects implemented by the Association until he shifted his professional practice to the High Court at Eranakulam. The informal get together of the members of CDMEA held daily during those days at the residence of Justice V.Khalid helped them discuss and review the progress and feedback of the actions taken by the trust. The get together was well known among them as 'Dur-bar'. This 'Dur-bar' reminds us the informal get together of the western writers at Coffee Houses of those days from where a number of writers as well as classical works were born. The Association was fortunate enough to get his useful advice and whole-hearted support even after he joined duty at Eranakulam. Jb.V.Khalid later served as the Chief justice of Kerala High court, the Chief justice of jammu Kasmir High and finally as the Chief Justice of the Indian Supreme Court.

A Legacy of Empowerment: The association is established for empowering minority communities in northern Kerala. CDMEA runs diverse educational institutions from LP, UP, High School, Higher Secondary, Degree, B.Ed., PG, and Ph.D. programmes through five major institutes. Over 50,000 students have graduated from our institutions, making remarkable contributions to the society of northern Kerala.

Important objectives, vision and mission of CDMEA are following

Promote education to the minority community of the society and marginalized people of the northern Kerala
To work for the educational, social, and economic advancement of the people of India in all ways and the mission is to establish and administer colleges, schools etc.
Development Centres, Human resources Development Institutes, Counseling Centres and any other educational institutions, either by the Society directly or in tie up or in collaboration with any other organizations, Universities, Corporate Bodies in India and abroad.
It is also envisaged to set up establishments to promote moral and spiritual values among the public, work for the welfare of women and children and establish and maintain Old age homes and rehabilitate destitute.
To engage in charitable and social service activities of every kind to help the poor and backward sections of the Society is the paramount mission of the CDMEA.

Activities

Provide awards and recognitions to the University Rank holders and school toppers
Provide endowment to the rank holders and meritorious students
Conduct career based programmes in association with leading institutes in India especially Kerala
Conduct PSC/UPSC and other service oriented coaching programmes to the minorities and other backward communities
Conduct NEET coaching programmes to the minority students
Promote educational awareness to the minority and other backward communities
Provide financial support to the poor students
Facilitate pilgrims of Makka during the time of Hajj Season
